Hi folks,

Ready to hop into Easter? Forget egg hunting – all the tasty insights you need are in this week’s newsletter. It’s no yolking matter, so let’s get cracking.

Scroll down to read more about palm payments, chocolate buying, and a mammoth meatball.

Stats to power your week

🍫 Creme Eggs are UK consumers’ 10th favorite chocolate – an impressive rank considering they're only available for some of the year. Going by stated preferences, they’re actually more popular than Mars bars. (GWI Core Plus)

👥 With our new USA Plus data set, we’ve got more insight into the different factors impacting consumers’ mental health – including financial strain. Right now the groups most likely to have their finances taking a toll on their mental health include people in relationships, those awaiting major medical treatments, retail workers, and millennials. (GWI USA Plus)

🚢 This one may surprise you – for those interested in cruises, the journey is more important than the destination. These consumers value the comfort and quality of the room, cost, and facilities on board – all above where they’re going. Who can resist an “all you can eat” buffet? (GWI Travel)

🌈 Whether you look at ethnicity, sexuality, or gender identity, our research consistently shows Gen Z are the most diverse generation there’s ever been. So it’s little wonder that 39% in the US say trans rights are important to them. It’s actually the most distinctive social cause championed by any generation. (GWI USA Plus)

🎭 Consumer opinions are split about personalized ads – 62% find product recommendations helpful, while 53% find targeted ads intrusive. So how do brands walk the fine line between useful and creepy? It’s all about what you’re selling. Personalized clothing or shoe ads go down well with consumers, but ads focused on housing and utilities – not so much. (GWI Zeitgeist)

👗 Yesterday we released our latest wave of GWI Kids, our research looking at 8-15 year olds. One of the big finds? After so much time indoors, kids are feeling more trend-led again. Since 2021, more teens say they’re fashionable, think it’s important to follow trends, and watch vlogs. (GWI Kids)

What’s on our radar

Influential figures are calling for a halt in AI “experiments” in an open letter, warning if scientists continue to train new AI models, the world could face a difficult future. But since then, some signatories were revealed to be fake, and others have backed out on their support.

Meanwhile, Italy’s data protection authority has gone so far as to ban ChatGPT completely.

The next stage of large language models (LLMs) – combining the technology with proprietary data for more specialized requests. Exhibit A: BloombergGPT.

AI continues to impress/scare us with its capabilities – an AI-generated verse in the style of Kanye West has gone viral, and it sounds spookily like the rapper himself. How long until AI gives us a Tupac hologram moment?

Denim giant Levi’s has announced it will be experimenting with AI-generated models to increase the diversity of models wearing its products. The move has, understandably, been met with backlash.

Many trends came and went during the pandemic. But long after everyone stopped whipping their coffee, baking their bananas, and growing their hair, Crocs still remain.

Pepsi have freshened up their look with a new logo. Part of the intent is to draw attention to their sugar-free offering, and little wonder – consumption of Pepsi Zero Sugar is up 37% year-on-year in the US.

Scientists have developed a giant meatball made from mammoth DNA – weird and wonderful, or just weird?

While we're on the subject of meat – a leaked draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has revealed how the meat industry is obstructing efforts to curb the issue.

Amazon is trialing a new biometrics payment system, letting you pay with your palm. Hypothetically, could you use a palm reader to pay for a palm reading?

In other mystical news, tarot readings are emerging as a use case for AI chatbots.

When life gives ByteDance lemons (AKA, major government pressure), they make Lemon8 (a new app).

Dr. Martens will start using recycled leather in its shoes from next year.

We’ve already seen ChatGPT-authored non-fiction, but “Echoes of Atlantis” might just be the first completely AI-written novel.

Influential YouTuber Dan Olson has released a critical video on brand activations in the metaverse. But don’t overlook Roblox, which continues to thrive.

Call me sponsored: Audible is testing ads in audiobooks. And watch out for promoted results appearing in Bing Chat.

Twitter is lifting up the hood to allow inspection of its recommendation algorithm.

As we mentioned above, experts and consumers alike have mixed feelings about the development of AI. Even though many believe it’ll help improve the workplace and be a useful tool, others have concerns about it being used unethically, or having a negative impact on the creative industry.
