Hi folks,

Is nothing safe from weight-loss jabs? Bakery chain Greggs, Las Vegas, and even the humble potato are facing drops in demand supposedly caused by Ozempic and co. To be honest, we’re just impressed potatoes are still going after Millennials supposedly killed them back in ‘18.

Scroll down to read about the Winter Olympics, prediction markets, and a new low in government trust.

Stats to power your week

⛷️Where is the Winter Olympics most popular than the Summer Games? Austria, Norway, Russia, and the Czech Republic are all more likely to follow the action on the snow. The country where the winter games are least popular relative to the summer counterpart is sunny Brazil - which might explain why they had a gymnast carrying their flag at the opening ceremony, for a bit of cross-promotion. 💹Following the Golden Globes, the Super Bowl was another milestone in the ongoing cultural emergence of prediction markets. But what impact have they made on the market? Two-thirds worldwide have at least heard of them, with 16% using them at least occasionally. GWI Zeitgeist

📉Cynicism is growing in the US, where 47% of Americans now don’t trust the government at all - the highest figure since we started tracking it in 2020. There are now more Americans completely distrustful of the government than there are who are interested in travel. GWI USA

📃Perhaps the worst thing about national stereotypes is they’re sometimes bang on the money. Where do you think professionals are most likely to cite bureaucracy as a challenge for their business in the next year? Of course, it could only be Germany (31%). GWI Work

Meet the audience: NFL fans in the UK

With GWI data

If any of your European colleagues came in red-eyed and exhausted on Monday, they may have stayed up late watching the Super Bowl. The NFL championship game has become more culturally visible outside of the US in recent years, so it’s a good time to ask: what does a non-American NFL fan actually look like?

Here in the UK, they’re more diverse than NFL fans in the US - while Black Americans are 25% more likely to be very interested in the NFL, Black Brits are more than 2x likely to be superfans.

Another thing worth pointing out is that the UK NFL fanbase is more affluent and more professional than their US equivalent, with a strong concentration of IT and tech workers. It’s often a good rule of thumb that Brits that are into American brands and entertainment products will have a good amount of social and financial capital - as anyone who’s seen a Trader Joe’s tote while out and about can attest.

Chart of the week

With Valentine’s Day coming on Saturday, we wanted to tackle a long-standing, rather thorny question: what exactly do men and women want from each other?

For all the gender polarization online, men and women are pretty aligned in their expectations for a relationship. Communication, family values, emotional availability, and mutual support are at the top for both, with the genders scoring roughly equal for each.

Nonetheless, there are some pertinent differences as you go down the list. Women are expecting men to step up in the home, and they still expect men to provide a financial contribution. For their part, men put more value on maintaining physical appearance and an active social life.
